Use a baseline, then add headroom

Planning targets are not guarantees. Live bitrates vary, and total household demand must be added. Two simultaneous 4K services, a game download and cloud backup can exceed a connection that looks fast in isolation.
A speed test is only one measurement
A headline result measures a short transfer to a nearby test server. Streaming performance can still suffer from packet loss, unstable Wi-Fi, router load, congestion or a poor route to the source. Test on the actual streaming device or as close to it as possible, at both quiet and busy times.
- Record download speed near the player.
- Look for large swings between repeated tests.
- Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
- Pause other traffic and retest.
- Note whether all sources or only one category fails.
Ethernet, 2.4 GHz and 5/6 GHz Wi-Fi
Ethernet is normally the most repeatable diagnostic path. The 2.4 GHz band reaches farther but is crowded and slower. The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands can offer more capacity at shorter range. Mesh systems can help coverage, but a wireless backhaul still shares airtime.
Place the router in the open, avoid hiding it behind the TV, and keep the streaming device away from interference where possible.
